A KLM Boeing 777-300 departing for Mumbai, India made a precautionary return to Amsterdam with an engine problem on 17 May 2025.
KLM flight KL877 had conducted a departure from runway 36C Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS). The aircraft was conducting a scheduled service bound for Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM).

Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft’s number one (left-hand) engine suffered a series of compressor stalls. The engine was observed to be emitting a series of bangs and intermittent streaks of flame.
Flight crew terminated the climb procedure whilst still below 10,000 feet. The flight then held briefly over the North Sea to permit fuel dumping procedures to be carried out.
Following this, the flight made a precautionary return to the departure airport. The flight landed without further incident on runway 26C Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. The landing was made just under an hour after the flight’s initial departure.
Flight data shows that flight KL877 made an on-time departure from Amsterdam Schiphol at 12:03 local time on 17 May.
Following takeoff, the flight had climbed to 6,000 feet before flight crew terminated the departure procedure.
Fuel dumping procedures were then conducted at 6,000 feet of the coast of Amsterdam, before the aircraft was returned as a precautionary measure.
The aircraft conducting the flight KL877 service to Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport was a Boeing 777-300, registered PH-BVW. This is a 4.3 year old widebody aircraft belong to the carrier KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.
The aircraft has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in March 2021. It bears the airline name “Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks”.
