The Australian Government has approved a deeper strategic partnership between Virgin Australia and Qatar Airways Group.
This landmark decision marks a pivotal moment for Australian aviation, promising increased competition, enhanced connectivity, and a substantial economic stimulus.
The cornerstone of this partnership is Qatar Airways Group’s 25 percent minority equity investment in Virgin Australia. This has now received the green light from the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB), as announced by the Federal Treasurer.
This follows the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) Draft Determination, indicating its intention to authorize the airlines’ integrated alliance. The ACCC final approval is anticipated in March/April 2025.
A New Era of Long-Haul Travel
This collaboration will deliver one of its most exciting outcomes: Virgin Australia’s planned return to long-haul international flying.
Subject to final approval from the International Air Services Commission (IASC), Virgin Australia will commence services to Doha in June 2025, with flights departing from Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth.
Melbourne will follow suit in December 2025. These flights will be operated using aircraft wet-leased from Qatar Airways, ensuring a seamless and high-quality travel experience.
This expansion is projected to deliver a significant economic windfall, estimated at $3 billion over the next five years, primarily driven by a surge in tourism.
By increasing competition and placing downward pressure on international airfares, the alliance aims to make global travel more accessible to Australians.
