Emirates is a major customer to the Boeing 777X – however, with the significant delays, when will they begin flights with the aircraft type?
The airline has over 200 units of the type on order, and is continually pressuring the manufacturer to get things right with the airplane.

When Will Emirates Begin Boeing 777X Flights?
Emirates is expected to receive it’s first Boeing 777X and operate flights between the third or fourth quarter of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027.
This would be later than the October 2025 deadline as stated in their original contract.
However, as per a story in The National today, this timeline has been given with “cautious optimism” by Boeing.
Airline President Sir Tim Clark said the following to reporters:
“I’m quite impressed with the energy, the concern they have about getting that done … that’s why I was cautiously optimistic because they weren’t just talking the talk, they were walking the talk,”
“I can see a high degree of determination [and] earnestness to get the job done”.
In order to follow the continued timeline, Boeing needs to get ETOPS certification on the 777X by no later than the first quarter of 2026.
This needs to happen if Emirates wants any flights with the Boeing 777X by the end of 2026 onwards.
Continued Delays with the Program…
For wider context on the delays for the Boeing 777X program, Emirates was able to put this into context.
If there were no delays and the program launched on time, they would have 80 of their 200+ order already in the air.
The program should have been launched in 2021, but was originally pushed back to 2022 and then 2025.
Then just in October last year, following the issues that Boeing was fighting, it was pushed back again to the end of 2026.
President Sir Tim Clark has always been vocal about these delays.
However, with the cautious optimism of Boeing at present, Clark seems more upbeat about this target.
Such delays have forced the carrier also to instigate a $5bn retrofit program to 219 of their aircraft.
The Emirates Boeing 777Xs will play a big part of not just the airline’s overall expansion, but the UAE’s growth plans too.
The new airport in Dubai is making progress, and Emirates continues to grow year-on-year.
Overall, in the national strategy of the UAE, they can’t afford many more delays.
After all, they are competing with other countries in the GCAA in terms of tourism growth too.
Will The Program Get Off The Ground?
It is overtly clear that Boeing has had it’s fair share of problems over the last few years, and delays in flights of the 777X is part of that as well.
However, to convince Sir Tim Clark with cautious optimism is a promising thing for the American planemaker.
The Dubai-based carrier is a major customer, so they must keep him on side.
As for the viability of the 777X program, the program will launch.
It is just a question of when.
Right now, things seem on target for the American plane maker’s plans of 4Q 2026.
All eyes now turn to Boeing to see whether indeed they can make this a significant reality.
